My Fitbit changed my activity and my parenting!

By Meghan Griech, Publisher Macaroni Kid Quakertown-Doylestown April 30, 2017

When I had purchased my Fitbit it brought about many changes to my physical activity. It also changed the interaction I have with my child in ways that were quite surprising! I feel I am a present parent. I am active, attentive and listen to my children and their needs. Do I listen as well as I think I do?

My husband and I both got Fitbits for Christmas. We quickly started challenging each other in daily step competitions, weekend warrior challenges and Fitbit badges. We both got so into our daily activity and time on the elliptical to increase our daily steps that we needed to find other ways to stay ahead of each other. I wasn't getting to where I wanted to be...at the top! So I looked for other ways to win that daily step challenge. I paced the house It sounds a bit boring I know but I have gotten really good at reading and walking at the same time. I would do laps in the yard on nice days. My son, who is home with me during the day, would ask me "why are you walking so much, play with me." I had to find new ways to meet my challenge and interact with my son. We play Xbox Kinect sports, dance offs, hide-n-seek, chase-n-tickle, and freeze tag. All the while I was increasing my steps, my son was just 'playing with mommy'.

At the playground I now keep an eye on him while walking laps, chasing him in open spaces, and continuing to move while he is on the move. As present as I thought I was, I realized that the time I have been spending with him would have been spent on the computer, housework or other task. I still do those things but at a time when my son chooses to play independently with his toys (trucks, coloring or watching Fireman Sam).

My Fitbit has really changed how I spend my time with him and engaging in activities. Most of those days I beat my husband! Perhaps we should have made a friendly wager!

I want you to increase your steps and parent games with your children!  Macaroni Kid Quakertown-Doylestown is giving away a Fitbit Alta!
