Keeping your Kids Safe this Holiday Season

In partnership with Tide

By Lindsay Flagan December 17, 2017

The holidays are upon us – and I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of people coming and going through my house this time of year.  My parents are coming to stay with us for 3 weeks, we will be hosting our annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, putting up new decorations, and we are baking, eating, and cleaning more than usual!  Plus the kids are all amped up and running through the house.  I may have at least one of them hoping to find some hidden presents too.  With all this hustle and bustle, it is easy to be less vigilant with safety.  Unfortunately accidents can still happen around the magic of the holiday season, but here are a few tips to help prevent them!

  1. When guests arrive at your home to stay, be sure to go over all of the child proofing you have in your house.  Make sure they know how to open and close anything that is child proofed (I can’t tell you how many times I have reviewed how to open the lock on the oven).  If you usually keep a door shut or an alarm on be sure to let your guests know!
  2. Always keep laundry pacs up and out of reach of the kids.  No need to entice kids into the laundry room either – it is best to keep this area undecorated…. I mean that is where you are throwing your dirty stuff you don’t want people to see anyway right?  In fact – for extra protection consider purchasing Tide PODS® Child-Guard™ Packs and tubs.
  3. Don’t ignore the warning and caution tags!  Be sure to read all warning labels on cleaning products and decorations.  They truly are there for a reason.  It’s a great idea to get your kids into the habit of reading them too.  Lead by example!
  4. Sometimes older “more curious kids” will try to look in places they wouldn’t normally go in to find presents.  Be sure keep areas with chemicals and/or harsh products locked and don’t even tease that presents are hidden in the home.
  5. Resist the urge to put laundry pacs or other cleaners in decorative containers.  It’s important that they stay in their original containers that many times have a safety feature and clearly indicate what they are.

I hope these tips help to keep your holiday events safe and happy!
