Check Out Nina's Waffles on International Waffle Day!

Yes, Waffle Day is a thing, and we're going to celebrate with some yummy giveaways!

By Traci Walter, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Lower & Upper Bucks March 16, 2022

March 25th is International Waffle Day! Crispy on the outside with a soft, doughy center ... who doesn't love a delicious waffle? Belgian waffles were first introduced to Americans at the 1964 world's fair in Syracuse, New York when a Belgian family served up over 2500 waffles per day!

While Americans typically enjoy waffles with a healthy dose of butter and maple syrup, different cultures have noteworthy variations, as well.

Stroopwafel - Netherlands

Taiyaki - Japan

Egg "Bubble" Waffle - Hong Kong
  • A Brussels or Liege Belgian Waffle is thicker and dusted with powdered sugar or coated in chocolate or cream.
  • In the Netherlands, people enjoy Stroopwafels, which are thin and crunchy on the outside and filled with syrup on the inside.
  • Street vendors in Japan sell Taiyakis, a grab and go waffle that's shaped like a fish, served hot, and stuffed with a sweet red bean filling.
  • Swedish Waffles are made in special irons that create four heart shapes. They are usually served with a dollop of cream, fresh berries, or berry compote.
  • Dubbed the Egg "Bubble" Waffle, this treat originated in Hong Kong and is super light, doughy, and fluffy. It's often served stuffed with ice cream.
  • Waffle Pao de Queijo is a savory waffle from Brazil that is made with cheese.
  • Kanom Rung Peung, which means beehive, is a coconut waffle from Thailand.
  • While some might argue that it's a cookie, no list of waffles would be complete without Italian Pizzelles. They come in a variety of flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and sweet anise.

Whether you prefer your waffles for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or even with an international flare, I'm sure we can all agree that waffles for dessert takes this culinary deliciousness to a whole different level! Thanks to Nina's Waffles and their five locations throughout Bucks County, we can enjoy delicious Liege Belgian waffles any time of day!

Nina's prepares their Liege Waffles with pearl sugar that caramelizes to form a crispy coating around a soft, doughy center.
